The Facts about 3d Lenticular Printing

Lenticular printing is not a new idea, what was popularized on movie posters in the 1940's and 1980's has enjoyed many technological advances resulting in more vivid and visually attractive promotions than ever. Here are the steps involved with 3d lenticular printing. Here are some of the reasons why lenticular printing companies have surged in popularity and is the new wave of promotion. Movie posters, CD and DVD packaging and book covers are all littered with digital lenticular printing and have proven to cut through advertising clutter.

The process starts with the submission of two or more images. Using special lenticular software, the images are sliced up and combined into one entity known as lenticular images. In order to combine the two choppy images into one visibly enticing image, they are then covered with what is called a lenticular lens. Comprised of a series of protruding plastic tubes called lenticules, the lens combines the images and creates a lenticular effect where the image changes based on the angle it is being viewed from. The different types of motion or visual effect depend on the layout of the lenticules.

Morph Effect
Morph effects involve one image flawlessly changing into the other and are great for comparing two facets of a product, logo, or technology. As is true with many of the other lenticular illustrations, the morph effect can be combined with other effects to create a visual masterpiece.

Lenticular Lens Orientation: Horizontal lens orientation (top-to-bottom motion) will provide the best Morph result; however, a vertical lens (side-to-side/walk-by motion) will produce very good Morph results.

3d Effect
The 3d effect takes a lenticular image and positions them in such a way to give them depth. This effect is great for simple items such as lenticular business cards, lenticular rulers, or lenticular movie posters. The simple effect can be combined with other effects for realistic promotions and eye popping advertisements.

Motion Image Effect
Motion image effects allow for lively images and are perfect for animation, time-lapsed photography, and even short animated films.
